The sixth pay commission report dominates the episode after the stories about the rising divorce rates and then make a segway into US wanting hindi teacher. The railway cops have got a new revenue stream and are coning people into getting them to pay for having porn on their cell phone which is not illegal.

Smoking as a fundamental right is strange thing in UK....Well isomehow i think that though all the mush about business is okay but cigarettes , liquor and intoxicants should be under a strict purview in ebvvery country.....

In India there is a law that there caanot be a cigarette vendor in the radius of 100 metres from a college or a school and i have witnessed that all cigarette shops are really close ... It definitely is a hazard to a naive mind...

Well to tell you guys a few things about pay commissions . One of my maternal uncles was responsible for laying down the fundamentals of the 5th pay commission and even then the same sentiments of displeasure were evoked by everyone...To tell you frankly that these burgeoning salaries of top officers in the gaverment is all that the pay commission does.... There are thousands of employees in the state govt and the central govt at lower posts who do not make money even worth mentioning.. say in the police deptt... a hawaldar etc.... the money given to them is peanuts.......... i hope the sixth pay commission has looked into that aspect too.....

Hi,

I felt your Sixth Pay Commission podcast just talked about one side of the coin i.e, justifying the increase. The other side includes the reasoning that just increasing the pay is not enough. Our government/pubilc sector has a very poor delivery mechanism. So, if you compare the private and public sector salaried you should also compare the accountability. There is no accountability in a govt job. You don\'t have performance based pay. Any performance bonus you get is fixed. Also, your job is secured. Unlike your private counterpart, you will no be kicked out if you are performing badly.

A fixed pay structure encourages complacency and gives no motivation to improve your efficiency.

Also, a person at a high position in govt has many perks like getting a bunglow. Now getting a sea facing flat at Nariman Point for a paltry HRA of 5000 - 10000 is a mockery of your salary package.

Some of the facts that you stated where wrong. The Pay was not revised 20 years ago. It was revised in 1997 through 5th Pay commission, and in 2004, DA was added to basic thus almost doubline the basic and hence increasing all other components.

Also, you mentioned regarding 3 national holidays. Its true they have 6 national holidays but they also have 14 gazetted holidays which includes all your govt holidays. Add some 10 Casual leaves, 30 earned leaves, some sick leaves and 20 hald day leaves.

Also, this is commission was just a proposal. So its widely believed that while implementing the same govt will not agree for only 3 national holidays.

Anyways, my moot point is only that the salary increase should increase along with accountability. Otherwise, its tax payers money going in endless pit.

Increasing divorce rate is a very interesting and telling statistic about India\'s society. Not only does it relate to increased salaries and female independence like you mentioned, but also decreased emphasis on child-rearing, decreasing ability to compromise, increasing amount of time spent in therapy later on! Always a mixed bag, but I think that being able to divorce without shame is an important right.

Just to let you know that the Province of British Columbia in Canada has already passed such laws where as of April 1st All shops have to COVER all tobacco products and basically keep out of sight. Further No Smoking is allowed in any Restaurant and / or pub, even thiose whch were fitted with special Smoking rooms .
There is a 3 M buffer zone from any doorway, window or air intakes and in Vancouver city the buffer zone extends to 6 meters.

Personal fines for not following the buffer zone is 50 dollars and for Businesses who violate, the fines can go to 2000 Dollars.

Generally the BC population in majority has welcomed the new regulations.
