Indicast #100: Gul Panag Uncut

Indicast's much awaited episode #100 is here and it's in video as promised. Gul Panag was kind enough to join us in the fracas and add to it! The episode is probably the lengthiest episode of Indicast but it's worth every minute.

Episode Notes

Finally, A big thank you to Gul for being very "un-Miss India" and speaking her mind on the topics discussed in the episode. Follow her @gulpanag and blogs at http://www.GulPanag.net. while you are at it, follow me @acmhatre and @abhishekumar.

Started listening, 8 mins drive to the office ... 2 quick comments:

1. I appreciate the fact that many people in the Mumbai film industry don't like the label "Bollywood", but you have to admit that it's catchy. To my mind, it signifies the Yashraj kind of movies more than the Rajat Kapoor kind of movies, though.

2. I think it's OK to say "actress" in Hollywood? If I am right, Julia Roberts is an "actress" rather than an "actor"?

P.S. : I do hate the term "batter" in cricket that seems to be coming into vogue and replacing "batsman".

More later as I listen .. on to the ranch and work!

Finished listening to the section on bikes on way home. Have a picture somewhere around which shows a house being transported on a bike in Cambodia, near Seam Riep. Will try and dig it out for curiosity value. So it's not just a family vehicle in a poor country :-)

Enjoyed the chat. And Gul sure talks a lot. Perhaps you ought to make her partner and have her on more often.

And yup, why the laptop? Trying the Diggnation look? And yeah not knowing about Dhoop, Gul's first movie was a big faux paus.

Congrats on raising more than $1K for Smile Train.

Dhoop slip up : i surrender but as unbelievable it may sound, I knew about dhoop being her first and have no idea why said that. It was like when Ross makes a move on his cousin. My mind was asking me to say something and the dumb "when is it releasing?" came out. But give me some credit for not editing it out :-) and plus it proves I am human! In hindsight, I should have edited it out.

About the laptops: The video was one continous and I needed something to refer to for the topics listing! And there was no way I was going to use papers. It was inspired by diggnation and would like to know why you don't like it.

Aditya, the problem with the laptops is that you tend to look at them more than at the camera or your companions. Computers encourage ADD and have a magnetic effect on the eyes. A cheat sheet would be better, perhaps even on any handheld that you have.

Other comments:

1. Effect of media: It is a truism, in my view, that we are what we read. And what we read is what we talk about, which then has a snowballing effect until the subject becomes boring or gets overtaken by what the media thinks is more exciting. Consider irrational exuberance in markets as an example.

2. On politics, I have nothing to say .. but the good thing about Tharoor and Panag as politicians would be that they are at least eye candy!

3. Terrorism, human rights and the like is a matter of "zeitgeist". The fact that the US has become a police state since 9/11 is an example. The fact that human rights in the 19th or first half of the 20th century in the West was not even discussed .. and these same nations now carry on about human rights in the East.

4. And sex, of course. Why should I not have an opinion about that? Should we not be happy that Mother nature made the act of making babies so enjoyable? Imagine if the process was akin to your commute in peak hours from Thane to VT?

And Abhishek, a reader of the Economist magazine, shame on you for not reading the book "Freakonomics" yet! The book talks about how the banning of abortion in the 60's led to an increase in crime in the 80's, not the other way round, if I remember correctly (amongst other subjects, like Sumo wrestling results and why drug dealers live with their mothers). Malcolm Gladwell also offers a theory on the increase in crime in the 80's in NY in the book "Tipping Point".

That's all from this side of the planet, folks. Keep up the good work and I will not "go away", because you will probably be back "right after this" (as they say on TV for breaks!).

Apropos Aditya's preparedness on the subject of "Dhoop": I don't think you guys should give him a hard time, because he was not interviewing Gul Panag. She was part of a discussion forum on various subjects.

Erm.. Not so sure about there being tonnes of Porn available on TV in Scandinavian countries. I've not seen any in the 1 month I've been in Sweden. But, I guess since there is no regulation against it, it's really easy to buy/download it..
