Andreas Kluth on Hannibal, Success & Failure

andreas It's a tough gig... to work for one of the most acclaimed publications of all time (during the day time), work everyday independently towards writing a book in a half lotus position, research like hell so as to get all the facts and the perspectives right, update a book blog almost daily, then come home late at night to crash on the bed! Andreas Kluth, the humble tech correspondent from The Economist joins us to talk about Hannibal, the Carthaginian general from about  200 BC who marched with an army of elephants over the Alps, defeated the Romans over and over again, but his life ended with an anti-climax; he lost everything and committed suicide!

In his book, Andreas intends to draw parallels between Hannibal's life and that of our contemperories like Steve Jobs, Al Gore, and may be even Heath Ledger! No, you won't find it in the 'Self Help' aisle of your book store. In this podcast Andreas shares all his views on this very eventful journey of writing his first book which is slated to come out sometime in 2009.

Success and Failure like impostors....they are not what they seem.....II agree.. In my humble and little experience of this life i have found that the teachings of tough times are everlasting.. Those teachings live with you all the time.

People like stories , characters etc....because it helps them to make a rational picture in their brains about the events. anything abstract can only be felt and not explained to the left half of the brain.

Nice episode....i am definitely waiting for the book to release....

Hi Kailash,
actually, I have read the Gita three or four times, if you count the first time in college, the second time in university, and the third and fourth times now. The greatest texts should be read and re-read, I think. And this is the greatest.
Regarding my daughter, it\'s actually \"worse\" than you feared. She speaks German, Chinese and English, but she\'s ... three. But we don\'t put any pressure on her. She just picked it up, from hearing it around her.

Andreas,

Great listening to you again. I think blogging about a book is great. One of the ways you could use it is to write about interesting anecdotes that were interesting but didnt make it into the book. People get a gist of what they are getting into.

Regards,

Aditya

P.S: you daughter just gave me a resolution for the second half of the year... Learn Mandarin! off to chinesepod.com

\"Autobiographies use little truths to tell a lie\'...What an excellent thought. I never enjoyed an autobiography because i always felt that am reading a forged story. There maybe a few exceptions but i feel most of the autobios are an ego trip for the author. Would love to know if there are worth reading exceptions.

I think Gandhi\'s autobiography comes close to your demands. But I guess Andreas would be a better person to suggest you some...

I had mostly celebrities and politicians in mind when I said that about the little truths to tell a lie. That said, the two books I just read, by John McCain and Barack Obama, are surprisingly genuine. McCain\'s is full of self-deprecating humor, Obama\'s full of tormented searching for an identity.

Ahem. Abhishek, I tried to code a link in the above comment, but it didn\'t come out. I used HTML. When I hit your link button it gave me two [URL] options, and I didn\'t know how to proceed. How do I put a link into a comment here?
