SRK’s Fairness Cream ad not so fair?

Let’s get straight to the point. In a recent advertisment, Shah Rukh Khan endorses Emami’s Fair and Handsome and touts that it as The World’s #1 Fairness cream while chiding a man for using a woman’s fairness cream. One must say that Emami has been bold and forthright in declaring that the cream will make you fairer in four weeks straight - ‘Char Hafton mein Gora banaye’ whether or not the company’s claim can be scientifically proven.

A friend of mine worked with a market research company for a couple of years might want to support the ad while I contest that the melanin content cannot be altered after birth (and hence one cannot become any ‘fairer’ by using a cream!’ In his words, “What any fairness cream does is to lighter the colour grade, or rather PUSH the skin colour towards the lighter side by 2 grades maximum.” The ad plays on the marketing insight that men (read: metrosexual) used creams meant for women for lack of a better alternative.
10/10 to the ad for its effectiveness. While it is a very mediocre ad, it still stands out from the clutter for the controversy that it created. I think, both, the ad agency and the advertiser (Emami) should be happy how things turned out!
