Indian citizens to get social security number
By Aditya Mhatre at 29 January, 2009, 2:16 am
Finally, reports say The Indian governement has kicked off a project to assign a unique identification number to each of the over one billion indian citizens. This could be compared to the social security number (SSN) in the US.
The permanent ID card which will have a unique number, photograph, and biometric data for every Indian citizen. The number will be provided by the National Authority for Unique identify (UID) which is being set up by the planning commission. To get started, ID cards will be handed out to all voters based on the electoral poll data and then will be rollwed out to those below 18 years old.
The real task is to ensure that counterfeiting of these cards is not rampant. I say rampant because counterfeiting is bound to happen but to what extent is depends on the actions that governemtn takes. Also, many systems and processes will have to be modified to accomodate this unique indentifier like the passport, ration card, Pan cards, driving license etc.
It would be foolish to think that this is a trivial task and will be completed in a year or two. I think that it willl take atleast 10 years, if not more, to see these cards with majority of the population. unless, the government does what the credit card companies have done - start making “Kya aap ke paas Permananent ID card hain?” calls.
