Irony of today’s parenting

My pediatrician friend often tells me that she gets really exasperated by her patients’ parents these days. According to her, more than the children, the parents are difficult to handle. They treat their children with hands in glove and while giving an injection it’s the mother she has to console rather than the child. She wonders how parents of this generation will raise their kids by keeping them completely away from the daily dust and grime. It’s natural to treat your child like an apple of your eye but it’s another thing to pamper them silly converting them into delicate darlings.
For such parents, I have a tale to tell. It’s a story of two birds. Both the birds are neighbours born on the same day. Alas! One is an orphan and another cynosure of his parent’s eye. The two little birds put a bet as to who would learn to fly earlier. The privileged bird is given good nutritious food by her parents, so that she builds strong wings and learns to fly soon. The orphan bird lives on generosity of the other birds and often goes starving. She is undernourished and weaker than the other bird. Yet she is the first one to fly. And that’s because she had the hunger. She needed to learn flying because she knew that if she didn’t learn, she will die of starvation.
A good environment can act as a facilitator but cannot cultivate the burning desire or the survival instinct to succeed. When a non swimmer is thrown in water he has two choices – die or swim. Most of us are so used to live in our complacent worlds that we don’t want to make an extra effort to succeed. (This includes me most of the time) So many star kids fail in the film industry and rank newcomers make their mark. Same applies to many other businesses. A good background can also become a catalyst for complacency and hence mediocrity.
I feel that’s an important lesson in raising kids. Even if you can give them everything don’t just give it to them, make them earn it. Let them know what hunger is for a while and they will ensure that they never stay hungry.
