Jhappi Te Pappi

The whole country is busy, busy in their two favorite pastimes, cricket and politics. Media companies in particular are having a field day with IPL and General Elections running simultaneously. Reams and reams of paper used for all important events to be covered. Television channels keeping the population of this country engrossed in the two major events.
There are contrasts and comparisons happening between the two events. For me, I am confused as out of the two which one is with extra tadka for a spicy viewing. Anyway, in this scenario one thing is for sure, that the participants of these two mega events are under great duress. This often leads to another favourite pastime of the participants, the media and the population at large, controversies.
The general elections are pegged as the “The Dance of Democracy” by the media. How can this dance be complete without a tinge of Bollywood Masala. The political parties do not leave any stone unturned to make a film star stand for elections. One glaring example in recent times is Sanjay Dutt being roped in by Amar Singh of Samajwadi Party. The day his candidature was announced I happened to be in front of the TV listening to the news, which is rare event nowadays. Sanjay Dutt in his inimitable style (now Cmon he has his Sanju Baba style , which he maintained during the public press conference) was addressing the people of the nation. He said, “Amar Singh mere Bade Bhai Jaise hain. Unhone kaha ki kya kar rahe ho tum? Rajniti main aake janta kee seva karo”. As I was listening to this statement of his I burst out in laughter for obvious reasons. But I can understand Samajwadi Party’s dire need to field in a Star for these general elections to salvage their position in Uttar Pradesh.
I personally think that the gamble of Samajwadi party in making Sanjay Dutt contest election on all important Lucknow seat is paying off. He is keeping the controversy market alive and gaining the top of the mind recall. Well a few days ago while addressing Mayawati, the current CM of Uttar Pradesh, he remarked on giving her pappies and jhappies (obviously borrowed from his huge mega hit film Munnabhai). This was not taken in good spirit by the Bahujan Samajwadi Party leaders and as many as three FIRS’ have been lodged against him already due to this remark. I do not think Sanjay Dutt would be perturbed (after all he is a veteran in handling criminal offence charges against him of varying magnitudes) with this.
But Dutt has issued a clarification that he addressed Sushree Mayawati as behenjee. He was talking about brotherly love and not to be understood otherwise and has rendered an apology. Well Mr Dutt may be a fledgling politician but has seemed to understand the rules of the game pretty quickly. I think under the tutelage of Master Amar Singh, the disciple Sanjay Dutt is going to Rock on in his newly found political career. And who knows that Amar Singh may be rewarded by the all important Lok Sabha seat from Luckow as Gurudakshina! Way to go Munna Bhai.
