Kalyan Singh apologizes for Babri Masjid after 17 years

By Aditya Mhatre at 5 February, 2009, 2:03 am

With the upcoming general elections, the political games have already started. Kalyan Singh, an Ex-BJP, apologised and claimed moral responsibility for the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992. The apology comes 17 years after the incident and is an obvious move to get rid of his “Hindutva” image.

THe entire press release by Kalyan Singh is full of ironies. In the press release, Arjun Singh said that “muslims had the Muslims had the right to feel proud of their faith, just as the Hindus felt proud of Hindutva.” This comes from a person who was heavily invovled in the demolition. He also said that he regretted that some people try to get political milage out of religious issues. One could argue that his entire political career was based on the Babri Masjid issue.

Also apparently, Kaylan Singh and Mulayam Singh have become friends but there are no “political alliances” between them. He said that they shared 4 common objectives ofdemolish the BJP and prevent it from coming to power at the Centre; wage a struggle for social change; unshackle the people of Uttar Pradesh from the ‘government terrorism’ of the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party; and, ensure the return of SP in U.P. after the Assembly polls. Yesh, Those objectives don’t sound political at all.

To give you a background about the situation is Uttar Pradesh, Mulayam Singh and Samajhwadi Party is seeing a decline in Muslim support which he has enjoyed since 1989 when he first became the prime miniter. Mulayam singh has been able to win the minority though his anti-babri, anti-BJP, and anti-Vishwa Hindu Parishad Stand. I highly recommend reading Kalyan Singh’s Wikipedia entry which charts his political career to some extent because he might be contesting election from your constituency soon.
