Making the difference - Part III
By Adwait at 27 January, 2010, 12:54 am
…And again, a continuation to the small environment chain written. Part one was about garbage, part two was about plastics and this is probably the last one in the series. This one aims at simple ideas or thoughts, which everyone should follow. To make a small personal difference to clean up the environment. Here are some notes which I’ve been compiling. Something very simple, but very effective :
- Segregation of wet and dry garbage. It is a must.
- Try home composing. For further details visit http://www.dailydump.org. I’ve started this in my home.
- Make sure that your garbage is dumped where it should be and not in any empty plot in your neighbourhood or on the road-side.
- Re-cycling of paper. Don’t throw away old one sided print outs and old envelopes. They come in handy for a quick scribble. Especially envelopes. I got my first pay check in a Hyundai envelope, when I was not remotely connected to the car company.
- Complete eradication of plastic bags. As a substitute, carry cloth bags.
- If the shop owner insists on polythene bags, tell them it’s against the law. Just the other day, the local grocer in my locality paid a fat fine.
- Make sure no-one burns the trash collected in the local bins. The municipality will come pick it up. It is their duty. Burning will harm the environment even more.
- There are various organizations which collect waste plastic. This includes all waste plastic, biscuit rappers, milk packets, old plastic bottles etc. It is used in creating tar roads. This is an active practice in Bangalore, but haven’t yet found anything in Pune.
The above are some very simple points to remember. Following these can make a huge difference to the society. Spreading this word around will surely make a difference to the environment. Even if it doesn’t spread, we must make our own personal contributions to save it.
