Smile Pinki wins oscar nomination

While most of the glamour is being hogged by Slumdog Millionaire, two documentaries for work based on India have been nominated. One of the documentary, Smile Pinki, is a 39 minute film by Megan Mylan about a girl born with lip deformity and the second one, ‘The Final Inch’ by Irene Taylor Brodsky and Tom Grant, deals with the battle against polio. So 2 out of 4 nominations in the Best Documentary category are related India and then of course Slumdog Millionaire’s 11 nominations.
It’s a bit sad that the documentaries topics are a bit depressing but then the general theme for most documentaries have a negative undertone. I am sure you can think of hundred of “happy” documentaries but then documentaries usually are revelatory in nature. Smile Pinki documentary was made by Smile Train, a cleft clarity charity (definitely check out the site to know what cleft clarity is) that is hoping to see a big boost in donations with this nominations
