Anand Chess World Champion

Vishawananthan Anand was travelling in a second class compartment of a Mumbai local train when his fellow passenger sitting at the edge of the fourth seat with half his butt hanging in the air and the other half almost on Anand’s lap started a conversation to fill in the silence. With a toothless smile, the old man asked, “So, young man, where do you get down?” Anand mumbled something. The he fired in another question, “So, young man what do you do for a living?” Anand replied casually, “I play chess.” The old man smiled, this time from cheek to cheek and enquired again, “No baba, that is okay. But, what do you do for your stomach?” Anand couldn’t help but supress a smile!
Vishwanathan Anand, the world’s number one chess player took home a cool $390,000 after he won four games and drew the rest to retain the World Number 1 title. That should take care of his stomach!
So, how big is this win really? How close does it come to say, cricket, hockey, or any other sport? Chess is played in 161 countries and Anand’s feat is almost unparalled! A lot of chess played in India can be easily credited to this man alone. “They” say that a grand welcome has been choreographed for Anand when he lands at the Sahar International Airport (Yes, it’s still Sahar for some) and that while it will not be comparable to the reception that our cricketers got a while ago, it will still be an acknowledgement of a glorious nevertheless. Anand shrugged it off by expecting at least his chess friends to turn up at the airport!
