Dhoni becomes captain of ODI Indian cricket team

Mahender Singh Dhoni, the 26 year old lad from Jharkhand who among other things gets his hair oil right has been named as the captain of the Indian Cricket team for the next twelve One dayers (7 against Australia and 5 against Pakistan)! He is under three years old in the dressing room, but, he seemed to have impressed the five men on whom the selection of the squad and the team rests on. While Dhoni will call the shots from behind the stumpts, Yuvraj Singh gets some more practice of being the Vice Captain of the side.
Now, aren’t there are three captains in the side who will be playing under Dhoni? Dilip Vensarkar, the chairman of selectors parried this question by citing Mohd. Azharuddin’s example who had captained a side that had five former captains! You can’t beat an Indian in arguments, can you?
While I have to say that I was rooting for Ganguly, I sincerely hope that our wicket-keeper batsman does himself proud. I saw glimses of his captaincy in the twenty20 match against Pakistan a few days ago. He seemed to use his histrionic skills on occassions when Shreesant bowled a bad line and length. His stare to the square leg fielder, RP singh was equally vehement when he misfielded (nothing new there) a simple chance. We atleast know that his eyes do the talking and that the players understand the language. Now, the question is whether he earns the respect of the majority of the team members to be able to lead the side well. Richie Benaud always maintained that a captain has to be lucky. He is only as good as his team. With that premise, Ricky Ponting is the luckiest captain in the world and Dhoni is one of the unluckier ones. Wearing that captain cap for India is unargubly the most difficult job in world cricket. Ask Dravid about it who thinks that the shelf life of captaincy is getting shorter by the year since it is not only about cricket but the standing ovations and burning effigies come in the same package.
I wish Dhoni all the best and I hope he has a machine or a teleprompter fixed in his mind which reminds him what he was here for - ‘to enjoy’.
