Ever been stranded in a situation where you cannot enter into your own email account? Well sometimes these situations happen and sometimes you create them for yourselves. In either case you are in for a not so smooth ride to follow. What is worse is that you get all your details wrong on the Hint questions as well as personal questions. The only thing comes to your mind is that your account has been hacked! And I can assure you whether it has been or not, if you feel that way it is not a very great feeling. Our mind being so restless is ready to imagine any nonsense and that makes you literally nauseate.
Some how, I was in that uneasy situation a few days ago (whether created or happened is left to the reader’s imagination) and was desperately trying to get to Rediff customer support to get my account blocked.
The first answer that I got was that Rediff cannot block the email account, not even if you suspect some serious foul play with your account (I must add that Gmail has that option, you yourself can block your Gmail account without calling any so called customer support service). The only redress I could seek was to file a cyber crime complaint in Cyber Crime Cell. Of course I shall do but what if in the meantime my account is used for some nasty purpose.
Rediff Customer support gave me a form to fill to verify my details when they finally yielded to give me new password. Well I heaved a sigh of relief! After all something was being done to restore the account in order. But this exclamation withered off as I saw the details to be filled in the form. Below are the few questions that I had to answer in my verification. Some were easy but some not so easy and if you get a wrong answer to even one of them you are denied a new password. Below are a few real tough ones at least they were for me.
Please provide the following account information as accurately as possible.
- Approximately when did you create this account? (Month and Year)- When account was created ages ago not so easy to answer.
- Do you have any folders in your account? (Yes/No)- If you make a folder and never use that , not so simple especially when you have to name the folder you created as well..
- Tell us details - sender, subject, date - of at least 4 latest read mails in your account. This was the toughest; I did not ever imagine that I needed to remember that.
For not answering these questions accurately enough, retrieval of password of my account was denied. So I started another session of frenzy calling to the customer support service. One response that I would never expect from a customer service executive “Please Call later, all the executives are on lunch” I mean c’mon man I know this service is for free , but if I do not open an account how is Rediff to charge its ad revenues!
The after lunch call gave me another piece of information that the trail mails that I had sent in response to the mail where I was denied password, were never read on account of Gudi Padwa; Saturday and Sunday. Fair enough, but what about this hapless human being who does not know who is using his account or what is being sent or received in the account for last 5 days.
As a last resort to put things in order finally I decided to use Brahmastra, I mailed rediff that if my password is not retrieved I am complaining to Consumer Forums and I volunteered to visit their office to show them that I was really concerned! I even got in touch with a Cyber crime specialist lawyer as well; though I haven’t succeeded in getting his appointment yet.
Divine providence prevailed and Brahmastra had its right effect. A few hours later I got a new password to access my mail account with a warning that this event should not take place again and further suggesting me to change the password received immediately. I was thankful to the heavens and nervous energy engulfed each cell of mine as I was trying to enter my email account.
I found that by and large my account was alright and all mails were intact. Rediff cannot give me the details of log in details for those 5 days even after I fought with them to prove my identity. Well, all said and done the ordeal to retrieve the password was over I think I should sign off with a lesson I learnt.
USE GMAIL —- YOU CAN BLOCK YOUR ACCOUNT YOURSELF IN GMAIL. !

I know how you feel. Today I’m trying to chase rediff customer support to get mny refund for a shopping I done on rediff.
I placed a order for a MP3/MP4 player worth Rs. 1870/ on 10th April. Rediff took two days to confirm the payment though I had done it though HDFC net banking and money got debited instantly. Then till date neither rediff is responding or the seller is.
How did you manage to talk to the customer care ? There is no no. mentioned anywhere on the site ! If possible, please share it .
