Formula 1 in India by 2010

As Kimi Raikkonen upset Lewis Hamilton at the Chinese Grand Prix, Suresh Kalmadi of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) announced (this time, officially) that India would indeed host the Grand Prix in early 2010. A contract to that effect has been signed bewtween Bernie Ecclestone and the IOA which shall hold ground for 10 years.
Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh and Sohna in Haryana have been chosen as the possible venues for the event. There is something in it for both, India and the Formula I as the latter gets a new market to capitalise on. The sport has been in the news for the wrog reasons for a long time now. Earlier last year, it was Shumacher who made the race boring because there was simply no one who could match his driving skills or Ferrari’s tecnical prowress and now McLaren was seeped in shame for its faux pas with honesty! With Vijay Mallya completing the Ferrari Spyker acquisition, IOA Chairman Kalmadi said that he would seek the help and co-operation of Mallya to popularise the sport in India. Somehow, the two events seem choreographed! Whether or not it may be true, it bodes well for India.
While it may be a lot cheap to lay the tracks here in India since our country boasts of a strong and a cheap labour force, we are yet to know how much will India profit from the whole deal. While it will be no great problem to host the Grand Prix which will draw thousands of spectators and another millions on TV by default, the greater question is how does one ensure that the track is used throughout the 365 days. May be some of the popularity will rub off from the Commonwealth Games that the Delhi will host in 2010.
