Fring Service Review

I have been using mobile data for a few months now and ever since been looking for good mobile data services. All I did on my mobile phone was read blogs using Google Reader (which is a pain on a small screen device), upload photos to flickr using shozu and download podcasts. Even after doing all these things I managed to use up only about 150 MB of my 400MB mobile data package. Moroever I have an hour long commute so I was desperately looking for things to do online using my mobile phone.
Fring is my latest discovery (referred by photographer friend ) and I am loving it. Fring is a free mobile based service that allows you to make VOIP calls, and chat with your buddies on skype, Gtalk, ICQ or any other SIP service.
The best thing about fring is that it actually works!! I was surprised at how easy the setup was. It took me not more than 5 mins to install this application on my cell phone (Nokia N73) and send my first ever mobile IM message to a friend. Since then I have been IMing people on the move and have realised that this might actually reduce my SMS bill. So the IM from my cell phone to web worked flawlessly and So I dared to make a VOIP call using my mobile data service.
Surprise Surprise… it worked too. The voice quality was very clear but intermittently got a bit scratchy for a second or two. Now that the VOIP calls also work through my cell phone which means I can save on my Mobile ISD bill as well.
I highly recommend this service to people using mobile internet. Another good feature that Fring’s mobile application has is that it works with Wi-fi as well which means that if your mobile phone is wi-fi capabled then you don’t need the mobile data services to use it.
