Hindi MP3 Download Services

Like a lot of people in Mumbai, I have an hour long commute to office. I may be exxaggerating but that may very well be the average mumbai commute time. While commuting most of my time is spent listening to podcasts but the negative thing about podcasts is that they don’t have repeat value. So once you a done listening to them, you are out of luck! But that’s not the case with songs. Hindi, english, pop, rock, hip-hop whatever it may be you can always listen to the song again. That’s the reason people like to download songs and as proven by iTunes that they are even ready to pay for it. So why doesn’t India have any legal means of downloading hindi/bollywood music?
Sambhar mafia has a blog post about Galatta.com where one can download tamil songs but a few google searches has revealed nothing for bollywood or hindi pop songs. So as they, if it ain’t on google, its doesn’t exist An industry insider informed me that the whole bollywood music industry is surviving on the mobile ringtones and caller tunes download which is suprising because the US market is just waking up to this idea!
Well, one can definitely not blame the Indian consumers for piracy. I have had atl east one big argument with friends who refuse to term their actions as piracy because there is no easy legal way of downloading hindi songs. I may agree with them on moral grounds but I dont think that their argument would hold itself in the court of law.
Talking about law, the hindi music industry has done nothing to cut of the source of the pirate heavens like Limewire, Cooltoad.com, Desitorrents.com and numerous other undeground websites. On the other hand, the music companies will be at a huge disadvantage if they try to stop these sites without providing users with a cost-effective alternative. There are alternative solutions like iTunes or emusic but again you require a non-indian credit card to use them. It seems that some RBI regulations disallows buying dollar services using Indian credit card. Yup, We live in a strange world!
Rajshri.com has made it’s move by offering paid movie downloads but unfortunately service isn’t available for Indians due to the reasons mentioned above. So if video is possible then why not offer music as well? Lets hope they are gearing up for it.
Personally, I feel that there is a huge market in India to sell music online. My strategy would cover these points:
- Build an easy to navigate website
- Price the songs between Rs 10 - Rs 15.
- DRM free music - very important!
- Stabilise the site and then go behind the pirate websites.
Also, please comment if you know of any legal hindi music downloading sites.
