How to increase your twitter followers

This is a follow up post to my earlier twitter post on 5 reasons why people would unfollow you. These are a few ways to increase your twitter followers.
- Have something interesting/intelligent to say : I usually follow people who can either keep me informed or add to my knowledge. I mean knowledge not only in an intellectual sense but also with general fact like what is a must have in a particular restaurant. Your followers will re-tweet your message and help you get exposure to their followers. Replying to others tweets also make a big difference. That’s how you’ll get noticed by followers of your friends.
- Put twitter in your email signature : I include my twitter account in emails that I use for “social” purposes. For example, my Indicast email signature mentions my twitter account but my Gmail account does not.
- Use pictures to get attention: I have noticed that my picture tweets get more replies from my followers. Take pictures of everyday oddities and post them. Although you have only 140 characters in Twitter, a picture can say a thousand words!
- Cross Sell : Leverage your social mediums whatever it might be blog/podcast or even vidcast. I podcast at Indicast and make it a point to announce my twitter account at the end of every podcast. You can do the same on your blog.
- Attend meetups : I have notice that my twitter count has gone up after every social meet up that I have attended. You could attend a BarCamp, BlogCamp, or Twitter meet ups to experience the result. It has always worked for me. Of course, I don’t attend it to get followers but I am just saying that it helps.
