Infosys announced that it will be setting up an “Infosys Science Foundation” to promote and highlight the achievement of Indians across various sciences. The non-profit organization was set up by founders of Infosys as well as Infosys Technologies itself with a corpus of Rs. 21.5 crores.
The plan is to reward Indians for significant work an contributions with a cash prize of Rs 50 lakhs. The prize will be called the ‘Infosys India Prize‘ and will be awarded in the fields of physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, life sciences, and social sciences.
This sounds a lot like what IBM did back in 1980s to promote research and expqnd their patents resevoir which they monetized later. There could be a similar hook from Infosys Technologies side as well but I dont really mind that as long as it encourages science develoment. I feel that this is a very good way for scientists to get a good ROI on their time.
