Infosys planning lay-offs?

By Aditya Mhatre at 28 January, 2009, 5:09 am

In a post earlier today, I wrote about the job cuts in the US and had speculated that cuts in Indian IT outsourcing firms might not be far away. Infosys has already announced that it would be placing around 5% of its work force under the scanner (whatever that means). Infosys currently employs around 1,00,000 people which means that around 5000 jobs are “under the scanner”.

Reports suggest that Infosys has asked its senior managers to give lowest performance rating to the underperforming 5 percent as part of their consolidate relative ranking. INfosys says that it will use this infomraiton to implement a six month mentoring programme for such employeees after which is will decide what to do with them.

Interestingly, report also suggest that 40-50 pre-sales people have been asked to voluntarily quit in the past two months but has been tagged as an annual activity and it very well could be.

This press release about putting people under the scanner is a good way to sensitize the market to the forthcoming lay-off and possibly cushion the fall in stock prices. Also one of the reason that company is asking managers to rate underperforming people as the lowest is to avoid any HR related problems.

I am one of the sufferers of this unjustified lay –offs. Definitely the performance evaluation are totally prejudiced and irrational. TCS and Infosys have given open statement on the lay-offs. But interestingly Wipro couldn’t give a statement. Since last 8 months wipro had secretly laid off 16000 employees and the number is still increasing. The TED (Talent Engagement and Development) behaves in an uncivilized way with the employees, just to embarrass them to resign on their own. They find ways and means to terminate employees. This is a very harsh treatment to educated Professionals. So Wipro HR is in the process of Talent Destruction activity. Can anyone guess who has given Wipro HR to undertake this activity. In the process they have committed blunders. Is the cuprit Azim Premji or Pratik Kumar or some Insider? If the Wipro top leadership doesn’t wakeup to all these blunders by Wipro HR, there would be insurgency among the affected Professionals.

I request the aspirants of making up a career not to join Wipro and ruin their life.

I request the victims of this unjustified lay-offs to unite and do campaigning against Wipro.
