5 reasons why people would unfollow you on twitter

I have been on twitter since it used the site used be down more than it was available but Twitter is now the new facebook. The service is almost never down these days and the graph of new accounts looks like a hockey stick. Twitter becomes even more interesting when you have a sufficient friend base to interact with. Once you have enough friends, a new problem creeps up. How do you keep your friends list clean? I use the below rules while choosing to follow or unfollow people on twitter. The list is in reverse order of top 5 reason why I would unfollow or not follow you.
- Twitter Scams : I have received quiet a few “I can’t send you DM… follow me. Urgent work” tweets from spam twitter accounts. I am not falling for that and will not follow you. I suggest everyone to take a look at profiles before they follow anybody. If the account has less than 25 updates, don’t follow them!
- Users who ONLY reply: twitter is supposed to be a place to share and not to respond to what people share. I have unfollowed quiet a few when I noticed that they only reply to others tweets and don’t contribute to the system. If you don’t have time to type in 140 characters of your own thoughts, You don’t deserve to be followed.
- Too much sharing: When twitter asked what are you doing, a lot of people took the questions literally. I have received tweets like Just farted, took a dump, and it gets worse. The reason I unfollow such people is simple, A person is known by the company he/she keeps. That applies online as well. I don’t want your stomach disagreeing with the Mexican food you had on my twitter page.
- Back to back self promotion : I understand that twitter is a tool to spread your work around (I do it too) but don’t abuse it. If I see, 3 “read my blog post” tweets under a minute from a user, I unfollow them immediately. Ask @scobelizer. Your followers would also value your tweets a lot more if you post links from other sources as well.
and the #1 reason for me to not follow you is..(drum roll)
- No picture or bio: There is no way I am going to follow a that has neither a picture nor a bio. It’s a classic indication of a spam account. So get a picture up and type in a few lines in your bio. Avoid cliches. Don’t call yourself an innovator in your bio unless you have actually innovated something and usually people who have actually innovated something rarely call themselves an innovator.

All excellent points and I see each one of them flouted on Twitter everyday. But then it also boils down to if you are on Twitter just for more followers or to really communicate your thoughts. Since I hardly use the web interface, I don’t really know how many followers I have unless I go to my web interface and it is always more than when I had last seen it. So I guess all my PJs notwithstanding, I must be doing something right.
Patrix : I think a post on how to increase twitter followers in due. stayed tuned
